Most of us are familiar with the 80’s Dire Straits song “Money for Nothing” It’s a story about a blue-collar working reflecting on what it must be like to be a rock star… adored and worshiped by loving fans, gaining reward and pleasure for very little effort. We tend to view God as an entity beyond our ability to comprehend and imagine. In mathematics there is a number that is a beyond our ability to comprehend and imagine called infinity. The phrase God is infinite has been frequently used in various literature. Interestingly, that phase is not to be found anywhere in the Bible. Is infinite a reasonable characterization of God? In this month’s Life, God, and the Universe blog entitled Is the Bible Consistent?, we examine two types of consistency in the Bible … horizontal consistency and vertical consistency. Horizontal consistency pertains to determining whether the commandments of Jesus as described in the New Testament are consistent with the commandments in the Old Testament as authored by Moses. Vertical consistency pertains to determining whether the actions of Jesus as described in the New Testament are consistent with His words mentioned earlier in the New Testament. In other words, did Jesus follow His own advice? Did He walk the talk?
